Some Diagnostic Terms

Language Processing
Language processing delays are defined by difficulty for receiving, recognizing and understanding language. It can also involve difficulty expressing language or developing concepts. Some clients miss social cues while others have difficulty talking on the phone.

Sensory Processing
Delays in this area affect the way people experience the world. The nervous systems receives messages from the senses, interprets them and turns them into a response. Difficulties in this area lead to tantrums, feelings of overwhelm, lack of awareness, and an inability to respond appropriately.

Developmental Delay
A developmental delay is more than just being slower to develop some skills. It means that a child is continually behind in gaining expected skills compared to their same age peers. There are five main areas of early development and we specialize in four of them, including cognition or thinking skills, social and emotional skills, speech and language skills, and fine or gross motor skills.

Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a neuro-developmental disorder that affects reading and spelling. When children get to school they tend to struggle making sense of letters because they have not yet developed a sensory system that can identify the sounds in language. Dyslexia affects areas of the brain that processes language, so vocabulary, and concept development may also be impacted.

Executive Function
Self-regulation and executive function skills are mental processes that enable us to focus our attention, plan ahead, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks. Delays in executive function often occur along with other difficulties including reading and writing delays, attention problems, developmental delays, autism, and lack of memory.

Dysgraphia
Dysgraphia is a learning disability that affects writing. Spelling, poor handwriting and trouble putting thoughts on paper are key indicators. Writing is a complex skill that involves listening, speech, language, reading, and motor skills. All of these areas can be addressed through therapy.

Dyscalculia
A math learning disability that limits a person’s ability to represent and process numerical data. Early signs include difficulties sequencing events, and developing concepts around place value, quantity, and trading. Difficulty for doing word problems and using steps to complete math operations is also a red flag.

Brain Injury
Mild and moderate brain injuries can be treated, with the most improvements occurring within the first year. Our therapies support clients specifically in areas of language, reading, writing, math, and organization.

Memory
The large scale process that includes input, storage, access, and recall is called Memory. This ability can break down at any place along the chain of rapid events from perception, sensation, attention, working memory and long term storage. Memory and recall can be improved through therapy.

Autism
Autism is a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties with social interaction and communication. They also show restricted and repetitive behaviors.

Our Founder

Mariam is a Board Certified Educational Therapist. She earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Utah and a Masters degree from Northwestern University. Her expertise covers neuro-development especially in language, perception, integration, and executive function. She enjoys working with children and adults to become self directed lifelong learners. Mariam can be seen biking, hiking, and paddle boarding in our beautiful Utah mountains.

Upcoming Classes

Enterprising Youth

This class is where middle-grade students meet together to discuss business ideas. Each 8-10 week section of the class covers a part of the process: (1) product development, (2) manufacturing to scale and content creation, and (3) advertising and distribution. Students meet weekly as a group online with a teacher. They will have work to complete outside of the class. Educational objectives include discussion, communication, planning, organization, motivation, mathematics, and computer skills.

Novel Discoveries

This dynamic class is offered twice a year and runs for 12 weeks. Members of the class meet online as a group with a professional who leads the discussion. Students read the assigned novels at home while annotating or noting key aspects of each chapter. Student sharing is key to a fun experience as we deep dive into mid-grade novels. Reading comprehension and writing are the main focus. Students will write a narrative summary and work through the editing process. We usually cover 2-3 books within the 12-week session. Different books are used for each session.
